About Bhaskar Sunkara

Bhaskar Sunkara is an American political writer. He is the founding editor of Jacobin, the president of The Nation, and publisher of Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy. He is a former vice-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America and the author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality, as well as a columnist for The Guardian US.

This event and Bhaskar’s wider tour for SEARCH (including an event at the NSW Teachers Federation in Sydney on Tuesday 26 May (tickets available here) and on Monday 1 June at VTHC in Melbourne) is being funded by a generous bequest from our late member Eric Aarons. The Trustees of Eric’s estate and the SEARCH Committee decided that an appropriate use of these funds would be an annual lecture about contemporary events and issues.

Bhaskar’s tour will cover the situation in Trump’s America, the response of left and progressive movements to Trump’s authoritarian policies, including his attacks on public education.

Eric Aarons was a lifetime socialist activist, a CPA member for 55 years, and a full-time CPA official for 40 years. A scientist by training and a prolific political writer, at age 50 he became a self-taught sculptor whose works adorn homes, galleries and public spaces.

Eric Aarons was one of the very last of a generation of socialist and communist activists born near the end of World War I, into a world shaped by that war, by the 1917 Russian Revolution, by the Great Depression, and by the fight against fascism in the 1930s and in WWII.
