SEARCH member and teacher activist in SA and NSW, Christine Moskwa, passed on Sunday 12 March 2023 after a battle with cancer and a fall at her home in Sydney.
As an infants teacher, Christine was inspired by the progressive policies of South Australia's Dunstan Labor Government in education and fought hard to see such policies implemented throughout the state. She was an accomplished teacher and also conducted campaigns within the union to enhance the status and rights of casual teachers.
As a teacher activist, she worked with other teacher activists including former SEARCH President Judy Ferguson on teacher-parent campaigns to enhance education opportunities in the working-class areas of northern Adelaide.
In 1996 Christine moved to Sydney with her new partner, Richard Walsham, an activist in the NSW Teachers Federation and a former SEARCH President. There she became active in the Federation and brought her experiences from South Australia into NSW, especially opposition to neo-liberal education policies which were becoming more fashionable under the Labor Government.
Christine was a strong supporter of numerous left and progressive causes and participated in myriad other campaigns.
The SEARCH Foundation extends its deepest condolences to her partner, Richard Walsham, and her sisters, brothers and their families.
