Vale Ian Paterson

Ian Paterson, a SEARCH member and former CPA member, died in Hobart in May 2022, aged 70.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ian was a hardworking member of the CPA in Tasmania. He was actively involved in the Unemployed Workers Union in Hobart in the 1970s and 1980s; worked as an industrial officer and branch secretary for the Australian Social Welfare Union from 1986 to 1991; and then as an industrial relations officer for the Australian Services Union (ASU) from 1992 to 2005. In 2005, he took up a position at Skills Tasmania, in the Department of State Growth Tasmania, where he served as Assistant Director until he retired in 2016.

Ian was a beautiful, funny and passionate man, with a keen intellect and a good memory. He was patient, steady and kind, and quietly there for friends who needed his help.

Ian was much loved and appreciated by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

An informal memorial service in Tasmania is planned for the weekend after the federal election, on Saturday 28 May from 1pm to 5pm, at Hut 9, Dru Point Bicentennial Park, 10 Esplanade, Margate, south of Hobart.

SEARCH extends condolences to his partner, Jane Bell; to his son Ben Bishop, Ben’s partner Megan, and their little daughter Isobel, Ian’s granddaughter; and to Ian’s sister and his many friends, comrades and former workmates.
