I’d like to invite you to an event I’m hosting in NSW Parliament to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Whitlam Government’s decision to make the contraceptive pill widely available in Australia.

This event is co-hosted with The Whitlam Institute as part of a series of events commemorating the election of the Whitlam Government in 1972. The Whitlam Institute – and this event – is non-partisan and open to all who wish to come along.

The Whitlam Institute holds the official Prime Ministerial Collection and Library of Gough Whitlam and the Whitlam Government, and has members of all political persuasions on its Board of Directors – including former NSW Liberal Leader Peter Collins and former NSW Labor Senator John Faulkner.

The event is a relaxed and informal drinks with speeches from the News Editor at Crikey Gina Rushton and Professor Michelle Arrow from Macquarie University.

The decision of the Whitlam Government in 1972 – 10 days into office – to abolish the luxury tax on all contraceptives and place the contraceptive pill on the PBS (reducing the cost to $1/month) was a game-changer for Australian women. For the first time, women in Australia had genuinely affordable and accessible options to manage their reproductive health.

All are welcome, people who support women’s reproductive health are invited and welcome to come along and raise a toast to the anniversary of this historic and important decision for Australian women and their families.

If you could please RSVP for catering purposes that would be greatly appreciated.

I hope to see you there!

In Solidarity,

Rose Jackson

Shadow Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Water
